Updated:
1. Build a 4-level pyramid
/fill ~-4 ~ ~2 ~4 ~ ~10 minecraft:iron_block
/fill ~-3 ~1 ~3 ~3 ~1 ~9 minecraft:iron_block
/fill ~-2 ~2 ~4 ~2 ~2 ~8 minecraft:iron_block
/fill ~-1 ~3 ~5 ~1 ~3 ~7 minecraft:iron_block
/setblock ~ ~4 ~6 minecraft:beacon
The layers are 9x9, 7x7, 5x5 and 3x3, starting two blocks south of you, so you never get stuck inside.
2. Levels and range
| Levels | Blocks | Range |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 9 | 20 |
| 2 | 34 | 30 |
| 3 | 83 | 40 |
| 4 | 164 | 50 |
Level 1 offers Speed and Haste, level 2 adds Resistance and Jump Boost, level 3 adds Strength, and level 4 adds Regeneration or level II of the primary effect. Iron, gold, emerald, diamond and netherite blocks all work and can be mixed.
3. Set effects directly (Java)
/data merge block ~ ~4 ~6 {primary_effect:"minecraft:haste",secondary_effect:"minecraft:haste"}
This gives Haste II without paying. Use minecraft:regeneration as the secondary for Regeneration. Versions 1.20.1 and older used numeric Primary and Secondary.
4. No beam?
Any opaque block above the beacon blocks the beam and the effects. Glass is fine, and stained glass tints the beam.
5. Change the beam color
/setblock ~ ~5 ~6 minecraft:red_stained_glass
/setblock ~ ~6 ~6 minecraft:yellow_stained_glass
Stained glass above the beacon tints the beam. Two panes mix their colors, so this one comes out close to orange. Stained glass does not block the beam or the effects.
6. Area effects without a beacon
/effect give @a[x=0,y=64,z=0,distance=..50] minecraft:haste 15 1 true
In a repeating command block this keeps Haste II on everyone within 50 blocks of 0, 64, 0. No pyramid needed, and you choose the range and the effect. The final true hides the particles. See the effect command guide.
Troubleshooting
- No beam: clear the sky above and check every layer.
- No effect: choose an effect and stay in range.
- Bedrock: the fill commands work; pick effects in the beacon menu.
