1. Turn on cheats
- In the world list, select the pencil (edit) icon next to your world. New worlds have the same setting on the create screen.
- Under the game settings, turn on Activate Cheats in the Cheats section.
- Confirm with Continue.
During play, open the same screen from Settings in the pause menu.
Before you turn cheats on
On Bedrock, a world that has ever had cheats on can no longer earn achievements, even if you turn them off again. Copy the world first if achievements matter to you.
2. Open chat and type a command
| Device | How to open chat |
|---|---|
| Switch, PlayStation, Xbox | D-pad right |
| Phone or tablet | The speech bubble button at the top of the screen |
| Windows (keyboard) | T, or / to open chat with the slash typed |
Type / and the game lists available commands. Keep typing and it suggests what comes next; picking suggestions avoids most mistakes.
Commands to try first
/time set day
/weather clear
/gamerule showcoordinates true
Day, clear weather, and coordinates on screen. More in 15 useful survival commands.
Typing long commands
- Phone or tablet: copy a command from our generators and long-press the chat box to paste it.
- Switch and consoles: there is no copy and paste, so you have to type. Put commands you reuse into a command block once, then run them with a button (see the command block guide).
- Getting a command block:
/give @s command_block. Also turn on Command Blocks Enabled in the world settings.
Multiplayer and Realms
- Joining a friend's world: the host turns on cheats and sets your permission to Operator in the pause menu player list.
- Realms: only the owner can turn on cheats in the Realm settings.
- Servers: an admin must give you operator rights.
Watch out for Java commands
Commands found online are often for Java and fail on Bedrock. For example, [ ] or { } after an item in /give are almost always Java syntax. Check Java vs Bedrock commands, and choose Bedrock in our generators.
Common problems
- No suggestions after typing /: cheats are off.
- Syntax error: a Java command, or a missing space or symbol. See fixing command errors.
- No permission: you are not an operator in that multiplayer world.
- Command block does nothing: Command Blocks Enabled is off (see command block not working).
Common questions
- Do achievements come back if I turn cheats off? No. That world stays without achievements.
- Do Java commands work on Switch? No. Switch, mobile and console Minecraft is Bedrock, so use Bedrock syntax.
- Does creative mode allow commands without cheats? No. Cheats are a separate setting from the game mode.
