The command
| Version | Get Notch's head |
|---|---|
| Java 1.20.5 and later | /give @s minecraft:player_head[profile={name:"Notch"}] |
| Java 1.13–1.20.4 | /give @s minecraft:player_head{SkullOwner:"Notch"} |
| Java 1.12 and earlier | /give @p skull 1 3 {SkullOwner:"Notch"} |
Replace Notch with any Java Edition username, including your own. The skin is downloaded, so the head may look like Steve for a moment before the skin appears.
Why old commands stop working
Java 1.20.5 replaced item NBT with components. On 1.20.5 and later, {SkullOwner:"Notch"} either errors or gives a plain head. Square brackets [ ] mean 1.20.5+; curly braces { } after the item mean an older version.
Wear it or display it
/item replace entity @s armor.head with minecraft:player_head[profile={name:"Notch"}]
This puts the head on directly (1.20.5+). You can also place it as a block or put it on an armor stand to make a statue.
Mob heads
| Head | Java ID |
|---|---|
| Zombie head | minecraft:zombie_head |
| Skeleton skull | minecraft:skeleton_skull |
| Creeper head | minecraft:creeper_head |
| Wither skeleton skull | minecraft:wither_skeleton_skull |
| Piglin head | minecraft:piglin_head |
| Dragon head | minecraft:dragon_head |
Mob heads need no extra data: /give @s minecraft:creeper_head.
Bedrock Edition
Bedrock cannot give a specific player's skin head with commands. Plain player heads and mob heads are available; check the item name with the /give suggestions.
Common problems
- It shows Steve or Alex: the username is misspelled or does not exist. Players who renamed need their new name.
- The command turns red: the format does not match your version.
- The skin never loads: the game could not reach the skin server; check your connection or try again later.
