The basic form
| Goal | Java 1.19+ | Bedrock |
|---|---|---|
| Nearest village | /locate structure #minecraft:village | /locate structure village |
| Stronghold | /locate structure minecraft:stronghold | /locate structure stronghold |
| Cherry grove | /locate biome minecraft:cherry_grove | /locate biome cherry_grove |
The chat shows the nearest position and the distance. For structures the Y value appears as ~ because only X and Z are fixed. On Java you can click the coordinates to put a teleport command in the chat box.
The # in #minecraft:village means a group: it searches plains, desert, savanna, taiga and snowy villages together. Use minecraft:village_plains to look for one kind only.
Common structure IDs (Java)
| Structure | ID | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Village (any) | #minecraft:village | Overworld surface |
| Stronghold | minecraft:stronghold | Underground |
| Ancient city | minecraft:ancient_city | Deep underground |
| Trial chambers | minecraft:trial_chambers | Underground (1.21+) |
| Woodland mansion | minecraft:mansion | Dark forest |
| Ocean monument | minecraft:monument | Deep ocean |
| Nether fortress | minecraft:fortress | Nether |
| Bastion remnant | minecraft:bastion_remnant | Nether |
| End city | minecraft:end_city | Outer End islands |
You do not need to remember them: type /locate structure and pick from the suggestions. Nether and End structures are only found when you run the command in that dimension.
Useful biomes
| Biome | Java ID |
|---|---|
| Mushroom fields | minecraft:mushroom_fields |
| Ice spikes | minecraft:ice_spikes |
| Badlands | minecraft:badlands |
| Deep dark | minecraft:deep_dark |
Some Bedrock biome names differ, for example mushroom_island and mesa. Use the suggestions while typing.
Only unexplored places (Bedrock)
/locate structure village true
On Bedrock, true at the end skips structures in chunks that were already generated, so you find a new village instead of one you have visited.
Older versions
Java 1.18 and earlier used /locate village without the word structure, and biomes had a separate /locatebiome command from 1.16 to 1.18. That is why commands from older tutorials fail on current versions.
Getting there safely
/tp @s 1200 200 -340
/effect give @s minecraft:slow_falling 30 0 true
Because the Y value is unknown, teleport high above the spot and fall slowly instead of guessing a height that might put you inside the ground. For strongholds and ancient cities, which are underground, dig down from the given X and Z.
Common problems
- "Could not find a structure": you are in the wrong dimension, or structures are turned off for the world.
- Unknown argument: on Java 1.18 and earlier, leave out
structure. - The village is not there: the command finds where a structure is planned; very rarely terrain hides most of it. Look around nearby.
